Face-to-face Workshop Development for Veterans Affairs

Following extensive legislative changes, Veterans Affairs Canada needed to train its staff in the implementation of the New Veterans Charter.  To assist in change management, the Competency Group designed, developed, and co-delivered six workshops in both French and English across Canada to 3,500 staff members.  In addition, we also developed three train-the-trainer programs to assist Veterans Affairs Canada employees as they delivered the workshops.

What our client had to say:

Bernadette and her team at The Competency Group (formerly Future Learning) were instrumental in helping Veterans Affairs Canada implement its most ambitious program modernization in 60 years.  Under extremely tight deadlines, The Competency Group team worked with us to design a variety of training programs (as the content was being developed) and then co-delivered these programs across the country.  Over 2000 of our employees received between 0.5 days and 11 days of training over a 6-month period.  The team also provided expert project management and project management assistant services.  Furthermore, they constructed several evaluation tools to evaluate employee learning.

Blended Learning Program for Travel Business

Business Travel International required an ongoing training program for customer service agents at call centres across Canada.  The Competency Group created a competency map of skills required by the customer service agent occupation.  Building on the competency map, we developed blended learning curriculum that included pre-training assessments, eLearning courses, face-to-face workshops, and on-the-job support tools for supervisors who acted as mentors.

Coaching/Mentoring Resources for Trucking Industry

For the Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council, the Competency Group developed National Occupational Standards for the Coaches/Mentors and Assessors occupations with individuals employed in these occupations across Canada.  We created self-directed training modules based on the Standards that provided opportunities for those in the trucking industry to upgrade their skills and achieve occupational certification.

Coaching/Mentoring Resources for Wood Manufacturing Industry

The Wood Manufacturing Council recognized a need for Essential Skills training in the numeracy, document use, and thinking skills that are necessary for satisfactory job performance in the industry.  To address this need, the Competency Group developed fifteen courses that focus on the Essential Skills required for the Assembler, Finisher, Machine Operator, Wood Manufacturing Labourer, and Cabinetmaker occupations.

We created comprehensive training materials for each of the fifteen courses to support a learner-mentor relationship.  Learners complete a course’s self-directed learning modules in either a paper or online format, while mentors use their mentoring guide to facilitate discussion and help learners complete on-the-job activities related to the course material.

Coaching/Mentoring Resources for Electricity Industry

Maritime Electric required an update of its customer service training, specifically regarding meter reading and customer service database navigation.  The Competency Group created a learning blueprint for these two courses and then developed the training content.  We then created a customized eLearning platform to house the content.  In addition, we created a coaching tool to aid mentors as they help learners complete the training modules and reach desired performance levels.  This tool provides guidance on conducting learning assessments, using the learning guides, identifying learning styles, and designing an individual learning guide.

What our client had to say:

The strong Project Management team with the Competency Group is what made us a repeat customer. It’s a pleasure to work with a team that provides such professionalism, leadership and results. Their team established a relationship that engaged our employees in a process that delivered a quality product that provides the foundation for future employee training and development. These results will strengthen the knowledge and skills of our employees and bring service to a whole new level.

Train-the-trainer Program for Health Industry

The Competency Group developed, pilot-tested, and facilitated a train-the-trainer eLearning program for facilitators who were to deliver the “Understanding Primary Health Care” and “Interdisciplinary Collaboration” 1-day workshops across Atlantic Canada on behalf of the Prince Edward Island Department of Health and Social Services’ Atlantic Building a Better Tomorrow imitative.

What our client had to say:

The work you and your company conducted for PEI on developing training modules for the Atlantic Building a Better Tomorrow initiative from conception to delivery was excellent. The quality modules you delivered were readily picked up and facilitated by facilitators across the Atlantic region, and the demand for module delivery grew exponentially as each group of trainees had satisfactory experiences with the content and presentation of the modules. The adult education philosophy and approach you used to facilitate delivery of the modules was right on target.

I was most impressed with the courteous and professional approach demonstrated by you and each of your staff during each contact we made, whether in person, via computer or over the phone. You truly accommodated the diverse needs of PEI and Atlantic staff and stakeholders in accomplishing the task at hand.

Thank you for assisting the goal of high quality results. You helped ease the process to a successful outcome, and I hope to have the opportunity to work with you again in the future.

Self-directed Learning Guides for Hospitality Industry

The Competency Group has developed self-directed training content in both paper and online formats for Tourism/Visitor Information Counsellors, Event Managers, Event Coordinators, and Travel Counsellors, as well as for the Canadian Tourism Resource Council’s Tourism Essentials course.  These courses, part of the Council’s emerit®program, utilized resources and activities that were directly relevant to the learner’s workplace, including self-reflective questions, tip sheets, skills checklists, authentic workplace documents, quizzes, problem-solving scenarios, and case studies.
