The Competency Group
Victoria, BC, Canada

One of the core principles of adult learning theory is the idea that adult learners are internally motivated and self-directed, and wish to take responsibility for their learning.  Therefore, it is important to engage adult learners in the learning process, allowing them to assess their own training needs.

Malcolm Knowles' book, Self-directed Learning: A Guide for Learners and Teachers, is foundational to The Competency Group's approach to employee self-assessment.  In order to determine the training that an adult learner may need, The Competency Group begins by developing a competency map for the occupation, which creates a framework for a self-assessment tool.  This tool acts as a benchmark against which learners can assess their skills strengths and weaknesses.  The learners can then work with their supervisors or mentors to develop a personal learning path.
