Competency Services:

Competency Assessment for Ambulance Attendants

The Competency Group worked with New Brunswick’s Department of Health and Wellness to conduct a prior learning assessment and skill diagnostic of Ambulance Attendants, and to provide appropriate recommendations. Individual competency maps were created for practicing Ambulance Attendants, which were compared to the national occupational standard for Primary Care Paramedics (PCPs).  We provided recommendations to address the gaps revealed by this comparison and to advance practitioners from their current certification to qualified PCPs.

Competency Assessment for Mining Occupations

The Competency Group worked with the Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) to create National Occupational Standards for Underground Miner, Surface Miner, Minerals Processing Operator and Diamond Driller.  These standards served as a basis for a skills passport tool for each occupation, which included a self-assessment guide and a checklist for demonstrating competency.

Competency Mapping for Biotechnology Industry

The Competency Group worked with BioTalent Canada to create competency maps for critical positions in the biotechnology industry, including: Chief Executive Officer, Regulatory Affairs Specialist, Intellectual Property Officer, Vice President of Manufacturing, Clinical Research Data Specialist, Contract Manufacturing Project Manager, Bioinformatician, Animal Care Manager, Quality Assurance Manager, and Biofuels Plant Manager.  We compared these competency maps to the skills being taught in relevant Canadian university and college programs.  The training gaps identified will inform the revision of biotechnology training programs.

Occupational Standards for Early Childhood Education

The Competency Group worked with the Child Care Human Resources Sector Council (CCHRSC) to update the occupational standards for Early Childhood Educators. To inform the updated document, we consulted over 1000 Early Childhood Educators across Canada through workshops, key informant interviews, and online surveys.  We also developed workshops and tools to describe how occupational standards can be used.

Occupational Standards for Electricity Industry

The Competency Group worked with the Electricity Sector Council to identify and prioritize high-skilled occupations in the industry, and to develop tools and products to meet skills shortages.  We developed competency maps and Essential Skills Profiles for ten occupations in the industry: Electrical Power Station Operator, Electrical Power System Operator, Electrical Engineering Technician and Technologist, Power Protection and Control Technician, Utilities Project Manager, Wind Turbine Technician, Solar Photovoltaic Installer, Solar Thermal Installer, Geo-exchange Installer, and Utility Arborist.

Occupational Standards for Hospitality Industry

The Competency Group worked with the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council on many projects to develop or revise national occupational standards for the following occupations: Tourism/Visitor Information Counsellor, Line Cook and Professional Cook, Tourism/Visitor Information Supervisor, Wine Server, Heritage Interpreter, Bartender, Food and Beverage Server, Banquet Server, Food and Beverage Manager, Executive Housekeeper, Freshwater Angling Guide, Hunting Guide, In-Room Dining Server, Small Business Owner/Operator, Outdoor Adventure Guide, Tourism Trainer, and Supervisor.

Skill Certification for Mining Industry

The Competency Group worked with the Mining Industry Human Resources Council to develop the Canadian Mining Industry Certification Program and the Mining Industry Training and Accreditation Program.  We created a standardized two-level certification scheme that outlined the prerequisites and proficiency requirements to be eligible for a Level 1 and Level 2 Certification for Underground Miner, Surface Miner and Minerals Processing Operator.

Skills Gap Analysis for Ambulance Attendants

The Competency Group worked with New Brunswick’s Department of Health to complete a comprehensive skills gap analysis of Ambulance Attendants for each region of the province. The process entailed prior learning assessment and skill diagnostic of practitioners across the province. From these results, we recommended course modules and training delivery methods to address specific skills gaps.  Our research also established the scope of training required to upgrade current practitioners to qualified Primary Care Paramedics.

Transferable Skills Analysis for Biotechnology Industry

The Competency Group worked with BioTalent Canada to update two of its services, the BioSkills Match™ for employers and the BioSkills Transfer Tool™ for job seekers, according to industry recruitment initiatives.  We conducted a transferable analysis of four medical professions: nurses, physicians, surgeons and veterinarians.  Based on the results, we identified possible matches between similar or related skills in each medical profession versus each biotechnology occupation.
