Training Return on Investment

The term “return on investment”, or ROI, refers to a monetary measurement of how an organization’s investment has or has not resulted in increased profit or productivity.

To determine a training program's ROI, the Competency Group uses the holistic approach of Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Learning Evaluation. This model involves evaluation at the following levels:

Level 1: Reaction and Planned Action

This evaluation level measures the satisfaction of training participants with the program. Level 1 evaluation takes place throughout and immediately following a training program.

Level 2: Learning

This evaluation level utilizes assessment tools like tests and work simulations to determine if participants have learned the training material. Level 2 evaluation takes place throughout and immediately following a training program.

Level 3: Application

This evaluation level measures the degree to which training participants have translated their learnings to the real-world work environment, emphasizing changes in employee behaviour. Level 3 evaluation takes place in the workplace a certain period of time after the training.

Level 4: Business Impact

This evaluation level determines the resulting impact of the training program on an organization’s business performance. Level 4 evaluation takes place a certain period of time after the training.
