How do you define competency?
Competency can be defined as a standardized requirement for an individual to perform a specific job properly. Competency standards are specifications of performance determined by an industry. They highlight the skills, knowledge, attitudes and behaviours, with the performance level required to operate effectively in a specific trade or profession.
Competency is often used interchangeably with skill. However, the identification of job skills or tasks is just the first level of a competency analysis. It is usually the first step in developing a competency map or conducting a competency analysis.
Job competency:
Job skills or tasks: What the person is able to do
Knowledge, attitudes and behaviours required to perform each job skill or task
Performance standard: The accepted level of performance for each job skill or task
Competencies can be the basis for developing competency-based training programs.
